A GPU, in full form, is Graphics Processing Unit; it is basically an electronic circuit that specializes in enhancing the performance of an image and video rendering system. Originally developed to process complex mathematical calculations for rendering images, GPUs have become powerful processors in their own right for a wide array of computational tasks, especially AI tasks.

Unlike CPUs, which are designed for general-purpose computing and perform best by executing a few tasks sequentially, GPUs are constructed to have a massively parallel architecture. In AI, especially in the training of deep neural networks, the processing of multiple computations at the same time is very important. GPUs speed this up by spreading the computations across their hundreds of cores, which can greatly reduce the time it takes to train a complex model. For example, this might take weeks on a CPU but take days or even hours on a GPU.

To tap into the power of GPUs for AI tasks, developers use a programming framework such as NVIDIA’s CUDA or the open-standard OpenCL. These frameworks allow developers to write software that executes parallel computations on the GPU, enabling the efficient processing of large datasets and complex algorithms inherent in AI workloads.

The impact of GPUs on AI goes beyond performance improvements. They democratized access to AI capabilities, enabling researchers and developers of modest means to train sophisticated models without requiring large-scale computing infrastructure. This accessibility has spurred innovation and accelerated advancements in AI across various industries.

Speaking practically, using a GPU for AI involves the creation of an appropriate hardware-software environment: installation of drivers, choosing an appropriate programming framework, and optimization of code to effectively use the parallel processing of a GPU. This setup is more complex compared to using a CPU, but the performance gain for AI tasks often justifies the additional effort.

In a nutshell, GPUs have transformed the playing field for AI by providing them with much-needed computational prowess to crunch large datasets efficiently and effectively. Their parallel-processing architecture is highly indispensable regarding the development and deployment of AI applications for faster, more effective solutions across various industries.
