OpenAI Orion Fake News busted

Will OpenAI GPT-5 Orion coming later this year?

()

Rumors have been flying about OpenAI’s new model, GPT-5, codenamed Orion. Whispers of the launch by December circulated widely, creating a frenzy of excitement for new possibilities. Some went so far as to suggest that Microsoft would integrate Orion directly into its Azure infrastructure. Now, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has torpedoed those rumors, calling them “fake news out of control” on a tweet recently.

Orion, if real, will be a quantum leap from GPT-4o. Speculation suggests that this model could improve many aspects of its AI capabilities: code generation, handling conversations, and even creative uses. But Altman has made one thing clear for now: don’t hold your breath.

This fervor was probably driven by a number of very cryptic tweets by Altman earlier this year, pointing to winter constellations like Orion. Over-eager OpenAI followers took this as a very roundabout hint toward a winter release for the model, but the CEO’s denial leaves the timeline uncertain. As OpenAI has focused on refining GPT-4 and releasing iterative updates, such as GPT-4 Turbo, GPT-5—or Orion—remains off the official roadmap for now.

Microsoft, one of OpenAI‘s key collaborators, has geared up for future deployments, but details remain scant. Given the frenetic pace at which AI is being developed the world over, the next big model from OpenAI is not a question of if but when. However, Altman cuts through the noise to say that won’t be happening this December.

If you’ve been waiting for GPT-5 or Orion, this is a good reminder to stay patient. Of course, fake news can sometimes give way to premature excitement, but it’s only then that the real thing will show up when OpenAI says so. Until then, it best to keep expectations at bay and focus on incremental improvements that already have come.
