Calculating the Size of GPT Models in Gigabytes: A Simple Guide

()

How to measure the size of artificial intelligence LLM in GB is the question we will answer in this post: Understanding the size of large language models like GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 Turbo is crucial for both AI enthusiasts and professionals. These models, known for their astonishing language processing capabilities, are often discussed in terms of their parameter count. But how do these parameters translate into actual storage size, particularly in gigabytes (GB)?

This article demystifies the process of calculating the size of these AI giants by answering the question “How big ChatGPT is ?”

Understanding Model Parameters

Before diving into calculations, it’s essential to understand what a parameter in a language model means. In the context of LLMs like OpenAI‘s GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 Turbo, a parameter is essentially a component of the model’s neural network that the AI learns from its training data. Each parameter can be thought of as a tiny piece of knowledge contributing to the model’s overall intelligence.

The Role of Bytes in Parameters

To calculate the storage size, we need to know how many bytes represent a single parameter. Typically, each parameter in these models is stored as a 32-bit floating-point number. Since 1 byte equals 8 bits, a 32-bit number would use 4 bytes (32 divided by 8).

Calculating the Size of GPT Models

Now, let’s put this into practice our GPT Size Calculator methodology.

1 Parameter = 32 bits = 4 bytes

Calculation for GPT-3.5 Turbo

Suppose GPT-3.5 has 175 billion parameters. To find out its size in bytes, we multiply the number of parameters by the size of each parameter in bytes.

Sizeinbytes = Number_of_parameters × Bytes_per_parameter

For GPT-3.5, it would be:

700,000,000,000 = 175,000,000,000 parameters × 4 bytes

The result will give us the total size in bytes. To convert bytes to gigabytes (GB), we divide the total by 1,073,741,824 (the number of bytes in a gigabyte) which means GPT-3.5 is 652 GB Large

Calculation for GPT-4 Turbo

Let’s apply this method to GPT-4 Turbo. Assuming GPT-4 Turbo has 1,776 billion parameters (that is 1.76 trillion parameters), the calculation would be:

7,104,000,000,000 = 1,776,000,000,000 parameters × 4 bytes

which means GPT-3.5 is 7,104 GB Large: a staggering 7 Terabytes (TB).
